United Way of Greater Cleveland

Picture a community where families are healthy and financially stable; where our kids are well educated and on the road to reaching their greatest potential; where even those carrying tremendous burdens are safe and provided with the resources they need to help them become self-sufficient. For more than 100 years, United Way of Greater Cleveland has been working to make this vision a reality. But we still have work to do, and we need your help to make it happen.

In Cleveland and throughout Cuyahoga County all people matter, and United Way of Greater Cleveland provides support to 128 local programs that benefit the health, education, financial stability and general well-being of those that need it most in the area. United Way develops and implements effective impact strategies, offers links to community resources such as 2-1-1, and serves as a focal point for community problem solving through community conversations and forums.

Community Shares

Greater Cleveland Community Shares is a cooperative federation of 45 diverse nonprofit organizations that have come together to strengthen communities through human and financial resources. Through paycheck deduction contributions and direct gifts, our donors help these organizations fulfill their missions. Community Shares started in 1984 and since our inception has invested $17 million in donor funds in our Greater Cleveland community.

Community Shares' member organizations address the root causes of social problems facing our neighborhoods, our community, and our region. They provide education, promote health care, protect children and women, advance home ownership, provide job training and employment, build neighborhoods, and work to end discrimination. Community Shares philosophy of change is based on the power of participation -- the power of individuals to shape change.

United Negro College Fund

The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) is the nation’s largest and most effective minority education organization, helping more than 60,000 students attend college each year, helping HBCUs and other predominantly black institutions, their students, faculty and staff. Their support comes in many different forms, from capacity building to faculty development, from scholarships to fellowships, from training to advocacy. At the heart of their efforts stands their mission, which includes building a robust and nationally-recognized pipeline of African American students who have what it takes to get to and through college and ensuring that member colleges and universities are well-prepared to help them succeed—in college and in life.

Providing operating support to their 37 member historically black colleges and universities is the core of what they do. UNCF support helps member schools keep tuition down to a rate that is 26 percent lower than tuition at other comparable schools. They offer grants to help build capacity, faculty development programs and assistance with teacher education programs.

For over 70 years, the United Negro College Fund has raised more than $4.5 billion to help a total of more than 445,000 students attend college and has distributed more funds to help minorities attend school than any entity outside of the government.
